Happy New Year!
And welcome to the first Making Optimal Possible Newsletter of 2022
which is a Goal Setting Special!
Don't yet have your goals set for 2022? Why that can be good thing

Often people are led to believe that if you don’t have your goals in place right from the start of the year, that you're already behind and less likely to be successful.

Not only is this not the case, but I actually think it can be better to take your time and NOT start the year with goals already set.

Something we are generally terrible at is acknowledging the progress we've made and celebrating our wins.

So taking the time at the end of the year to take stock of the progress we've made is really important.

Then I think it's equally important that we take the opportunity to properly switch-off and enjoy some down-time (we're generally terrible at doing this too).

You can't do either of these if you're already jumping ahead to new goals and what you want to do next.

Which means that if you've taken the time to reflect on your progress. Then you've relaxed and switched off. There's a good chance you'll be starting the New Year without new goals set.

And that's good!

Because now you're in a better place mentally. You're feeling positive about what you've achieved and you're far better equipped to start the New Year and take on the challenges to come.

I don't know about you but I'd prefer to take a little time to plan my route before starting a journey. Rather than setting off at full speed without knowing if you're going in the right direction.

Which is how I view the start of the year.

It's when you begin gathering your thoughts about potential goals.

Fully committing to them once you're happy they are going to take you in the direction you want to go.

Then you begin to map out an action plan from there.

You remove that feeling of pressure and start the year feeling calm and in control.

If you've already got your goals in place then great.

But if you haven't yet then don't worry.

Take your time to plan the right destination and route for you then get after it!

My Goal Setting Framework

If you're still finalising your goals for this year, or even if you've yet to start, my tip of the week is that you follow my 5 Step Goal Setting Framework:

1. Ask yourself what would represent a successful year in one sentence?
How would you like to feel and what would you like to have accomplished by the end of 2022?

2. Then elaborate on this and list the different elements that will contribute to that goal.
For example if your sentence is 'to feel healthy, happy and make more time for me', you might list losing weight, being able to run 10k and starting a new hobby.

3. Now ask yourself how far are you from being where you want to be?
If your goal is to run a 10k how far can you run currently, are you doing any running at all?

4. List WHAT YOU COULD DO to get there?
List all the potential options and people you could ask for support and advice.

5. Now you commit to what YOU WILL DO to get you there?
This is where your goal turns from something you'd like to happen, to an action plan you commit to. Write down what you'll do when.

To make this process even more effective you can define mini goals that will let you know you’re making progress towards your bigger goals.

“What gets measured gets improved!”

If you are looking at making changes to your health and performance then I can't recommend enough that you measure where you currently are. Whether your goal is fat loss, fitness, improving your sleep, energy levels or productivity.

It's really important to have a mark in the sand so that you can then see progress. If you don't do this then you won't know if you're making progress or not and that's when you'll lose motivation.

With my High Performance Coaching Clients I'll have them complete my Health & Performance Diagnostic at the start which gives you the metrics you can see above for each of the key pillars.

As well as giving a benchmark, it also highlights the aspects of their health and performance that they will benefit from addressing first.

If you'd like to get an idea of where you currently stand you can complete my FREE Health & Performance Scorecard below.

It's just 10 quick questions and will give you a great idea of where you currently stand heading into the year:
